Rain lashed the café windows, blurring neon signs into watery streaks. Inside, the warm glow of pendant lights flickered as thunder rumbled, but the café’s heart—its people—remained huddled in the golden circle of Mr. Coffee’s domain.

He stood behind the counter, hands trembling only slightly as he focused on the hiss of the espresso machine. It wasn’t fear—well, maybe a little. But mostly, it was the thrill of power coursing through him, steam swirling at his fingertips, ready to obey.

A sharp knock rattled the door. Startled, Mr. Coffee almost let a plume of steam escape, but a quick breath steadied him. The door creaked open to reveal Lily, rain-soaked and grinning, her backpack askew. “I brought everyone some dry socks!” she announced, holding up a mismatched bundle. The customers cheered, grateful for the small comfort.

Lily slid onto a stool, eyes sparkling. “I saw what you did with the steam. You’re like—like a superhero, Mr. Coffee!”

He coughed, nearly choking on his own surprise. “A superhero? Me? I just make coffee.”

“But you protected us! When the roof started shaking, you sealed the cracks—like magic!” She lowered her voice, glancing around. “Maybe you can do more. Maybe you can help the whole city.”
He glanced at the storm, then at his trembling hands. “I’m not sure I can control it. Watch.”
He focused, picturing a shield. Steam burbled from the machine, swirling into a shimmering wall in front of the door. The customers oohed in awe. Suddenly, with a loud POP, the steam barrier collapsed, splattering hot coffee right onto Mr. Coffee’s apron and face.
The room burst into laughter, even Mr. Coffee himself, though he wiped his glasses with a sheepish grin. “Well, I suppose even superheroes get a little steamed now and then.”
Lily giggled. “You just need practice! I can help. My science club does experiments all the time. We could test your powers!”
Before he could answer, the lights flickered again. Outside, the storm seemed to pulse, lightning crackling in unnatural spirals. From the swirling clouds, a shadowy figure emerged, their eyes glowing with mischievous energy. The echoing laugh returned, sharper this time, rolling through the empty street.
Lily’s eyes widened. “That must be the one causing all this!”
Mr. Coffee squared his shoulders. The fear was still there, but it was joined by something fiercer—hope. He looked at Lily, then at his friends gathered close. “Let’s see what a little steam can do.”
As he raised his hands, the storm outside roared back, and the villain’s silhouette drew nearer. Would Mr. Coffee’s newfound powers be enough to shield his café—and the city—from what was coming next?
