Sunlight danced across the beach, glinting on the scattered shells and pebbles as Mila and Liora raced along the shoreline, laughter mingling with the ocean breeze. The tide was low, revealing pockets of seaweed and smooth driftwood. Mila bent down, her fingers sifting through the sand, searching for the perfect shell to add to her collection.

Liora fluttered beside her, wings catching the golden light. "Look at this one!" she chirped, holding up a glossy, spiraled shell. It shimmered with hints of silver, almost as if it were hiding something magical.

Mila reached for it, turning it over in her palm. Something inside rattled. She glanced at Liora, curiosity tightening in her chest. "Did you hear that?"

Liora nodded, her emerald eyes wide. "Open it! Maybe it's a pearl!"

Carefully, Mila pried the shell apart. Instead of a pearl, a tiny, folded scrap of parchment slipped into her hand. Its edges were crisp, and it glowed faintly in the sunlight. Mila and Liora leaned in close, breath held as she unfolded it.

A map unfurled before them—delicate lines tracing a path from the beach up the winding mountain trail. Strange symbols dotted the route, and at the very top, a golden star marked a spot. Mila's heart thudded. "Is this... a treasure map?"
Liora hovered, scanning the map with quick, darting eyes. "I've never seen these markings before. But that star—it has to mean something!"
The waves hushed for a moment, as if the world itself was listening. Mila felt a shiver of excitement, but also a thread of nervousness. The mountain loomed beyond the beach, its peak lost in wisps of cloud. "Should we try to follow it?" she whispered.
Liora grinned, wings fluttering faster. "We have to! Imagine what could be up there!"
Mila hesitated, glancing back at the distant rooftops of their school. "We'll have to wait until after. But... what if it's dangerous?"
Liora touched Mila's shoulder gently. "We can be careful. We'll stick together."
The day crawled by, anticipation making every lesson feel twice as long. Mila kept the map hidden in her pocket, fingers brushing it now and then, feeling the promise of adventure. When the school bell finally rang, she met Liora beneath the old cypress tree, their secret burning between them.
They set off, following the map's path from the beach, footprints trailing behind. The air grew cooler as they neared the mountain, the sound of the surf fading into the rustle of wind-blown grass.
At the foot of the trail, Mila paused, map trembling in her hands. "Do you think we can really find it?"
Liora squeezed her hand, her eyes sparkling. "Only one way to find out."
With a last glance back, they started up the mountain, the map their only guide. But as they rounded the first bend, a shadow flickered across the path—a shape neither of them could quite see, but both could feel.
Mila's pulse quickened. Was someone else searching for the treasure, too?
The mountain seemed to hold its breath, waiting for their next step.
