The sun hung high over the shimmering blue of the ocean, casting golden glints on the warm, powdery sand. Mila’s cheerful laughter echoed across the beach as she dashed toward the shoreline, her bright eyes sparkling with excitement. Beside her, Bones, a tall, slightly crooked skeleton with a grin that never quite faded, clattered happily, clutching a trowel in one bony hand.
“Let’s make the biggest sandcastle ever!” Mila declared, plopping down and scooping up a handful of sand. Bones chuckled, his hollow voice ringing out as he helped pat a mound into shape. Soon, they were sculpting silly towers with giant, crooked windows, and even a tiny moat filled with seashells.
Nearby, a scruffy crab with a grumpy expression scuttled along the sand, its large claw dragging behind it. Its big, beady eyes watched Mila and Bones’s antics with suspicion. The crab’s favorite shell, a shiny, spiraled treasure, sat near its tiny den, gleaming in the sun.
Mila giggled as she stacked a mound of sand into a wobbly pyramid. “Look, Bones! We’re almost done! It’s a masterpiece!” she squealed, clapping her hands. Bones nodded, adding a silly flag made from a tiny seashell on top.
Suddenly, Mila’s elbow brushed against the crab’s shell. With a tiny squeak, she knocked it over, sending the shiny shell tumbling into the sand. The crab’s eyes widened in shock and then instantly darkened with annoyance.
“Uh-oh,” Mila whispered, her face falling. But before she could apologize, the crab let out a loud, grumpy chirp and scuttled up quickly, claws snapping in the air.
“Uh-oh, it’s mad!” Mila said, eyes wide with surprise. Bones nodded, stepping back as the crab charged forward, scuttling faster than Mila had ever seen a crab move. Its big claw waved threateningly.
“Run, Bones!” Mila shouted, grabbing her friend’s hand. They took off across the sand, giggling nervously. The crab was in hot pursuit, snapping its claws and scuttling over dunes of sand, determined to reclaim its beloved shell.
Mila and Bones darted past a line of colorful beach umbrellas, then leapt over a pile of beach balls that bounced wildly in their path. Waves crashed nearby, their frothy tops shimmering with the sunlight, and Mila dashed toward the water’s edge, hoping to lose the crab in the surf.
“Almost there!” Mila yelled, laughing as she dodged a rogue wave and splashed her feet in the cool water. Bones, ever the daring skeleton, balanced on a floating piece of driftwood, teasing the crab with a flick of his bony hand.
Just as the crab skittered onto the wet sand, ready to snap again, Mila spotted something peculiar—a lighthouse-shaped kite stuck in the sand, its tail fluttering in the breeze. An idea sparked in her mind.
“Quick, Bones! Help me!” she called, grabbing the kite’s string. With a quick tug, they managed to lift it just as the crab lunged forward. The kite soared into the sky, its bright colors flapping wildly, distracting the crab.
Breathing hard but grinning, Mila looked at Bones. “That was close! Do you think the crab will come back for its shell?”
Bones chuckled, his jaw rattling. “Maybe, but for now, I think we’ve earned a break. Or… maybe a new sandcastle adventure?”
As they settled onto the warm sand, the crab scuttled back to its den, glowering but defeated. The beach stretched endlessly before them, full of mysteries and silly surprises. And somewhere in the distance, the faint sound of the lighthouse’s beacon flickered, hinting that their next adventure was just over the horizon.
